NonProfit HelpDesk Announces
Leadership Peer Support Groups for NonProfit Organizations
Brooklyn, NY, March 16, 2010 – The NonProfit HelpDesk (NPHD), a division of the Jewish Community Council of Greater Coney Island, announces its PACT (Peer Advisory Community Teams) program for leaders of nonprofit organizations.
“Working in the non-profit world can be exciting, values-driven, and gratifying,” notes NPHD Director Chaya Abelsky, “But it also frequently means having more priorities than resources. Leaders of community-based nonprofits can feel isolated, drained and frustrated. They need an opportunity to take a deep breath in a supportive environment. The PACT program is designed to address those needs.”
Peer advisory boards, sometimes called mastermind groups, have long been used by business people to create a safe haven where leaders faced with similar challenges gather to connect and consult with each other, share experiences, create accountability for each other, and get advice and support. Research shows that the most valuable resource for leaders is connection with other leaders in similar situations.
Nonprofit leaders in an NPHD PACT group will work collaboratively to make their organizations the best they can be. Each group will help its members resolve challenges and celebrate individual successes. By melding their knowledge, skills and experience, the group will become a powerful force, benefitting each member and the organizations that they lead.
The extent of interest in this type of program is indicated by participation in an informational call on the program, for which 30 nonprofit leaders signed up with only minimal publicity. Participants on the information call said things like, “I like this because you can save time by getting information from the group rather than doing research which may not be productive.” They also indicated appreciation of the opportunity to connect with other nonprofit organizations to share resources.
Each PACT group will be comprised of non-profit leaders in organizations whose missions do not overlap. A professionally credentialed coach will facilitate, following a structured process that allows for learning and participation, assures that participants’ issues are clearly identified and supports fruitful discussion. Members will be encouraged to create appropriate action plans for themselves, and given support and accountability in achieving their goals.
Registration is ongoing at the NPHD website, http://nphd.org/services/leadership_organizational/PACT or by calling 718-449-5000, x 2267.
Development and operation of this program is funded by the JP Morgan Chase Foundation, New York City Department of Youth and Community Development, the Altman Foundation, and the William Randolph Hearst Foundation for funding the presentation of these courses.
About the NonProfit HelpDesk
The NonProfit HelpDesk (NPHD) was created in 1992 to provide technical assistance to strengthen nonprofit organizations throughout New York City. These community-based nonprofits are a vital part of the fabric of life in the City, providing youth services, cooked meals, services for the homeless, local development and cultural celebration, as well as many other services. As our social safety net frays, these groups make a critical difference in the quality of life for neighborhood residents.
NPHD strengthens these organizations by providing services, education and resources in financial management, technology, marketing and communications, and in the development of leadership, organizations and programs. We are frequently able to offer our services free of charge.
The NonProfit HelpDesk uses our social service background to deliver holistic support with understanding, relevance and innovation. We have helped more than 900 NYC nonprofits to automate their fiscal, administrative and programmatic operations, expand their management capacities, boost staff efficiency and confidence and ultimately improve service delivery to constituents.
